Whats the best type of varnish to use for crafts?
I’m painting with acrylics on raw craft wood, then I am gluing down paper to it. Gluing it down is kinda not working well, even though I’ve tried regular glue, wood glue, and watered down glue kinda like papier mache or something. Eventually it sticks though. But now I am using Home Decor by Delta brand Acrylic Varnish on top. Its liquid and says its a “final finish over wood, plaster, non-fire ceramics, papier mache, and decorative painted projects.” I realize it doesn’t say paper, but what else am I suppose to use to seal in the wood and paper?
I don’t want to use resin, whats left?
Generally, the *strongest* clear finish/sealer to use on most any suface will be polyurethane (from the hardware store, though some “craft” or “art” sealers will be the same thing just more expensive).
You could also use your “acrylic” varnish which will be almost the same (but not *quite* as resistant to later scratching, etc).
You can also use those clear finishes as your adhesive when adding the paper just like you would the other glues.
Btw, wood and papier mache are also paper (or rather they all come from wood)…they’re all *porous* which is what they’re trying to say there.
(My favorite brand of high-quality polyurethane is Varathane, water-based, gloss, but it comes in various versions.)
