My wicker basket has started to smell sort of .perfumy?
Why? it is a very good quality picnic basket – only ever used for ironing pile. Situated in a damp room – could this be why.
Not a nice smell, but definitely Perfume like.
Wicker, as with other woods like willow, when made into baskets, are often unfinished. These are very porous materials and will easily absorb scents.
To get rid of the smell, remove the basket from the laundry room and put in a sunny, well ventilated room until the smell is gone. You may be able to speed the process by sprinkling the basket with baking soda.
When the smell is gone, spray with a clear acrylic finish. Give it two or three coats. If you don’t want your basket to be shiny, be sure to buy a matte finish acrylic. Allow to dry thoroughly. Just make sure all dust is removed before spraying! I highly recommend blow drying the thing and then using a tack cloth before sealing.
If you live in a high-humid area, or the basket is exposed to high humidity, make sure you repeat this process often.
