why is it that while most North americans keep their cats indoors most Europeans leave their cats (and often dogs) outdoors? Some Europeans make fun of people who keep their cats indoors (I don’t) so why do most Europeans leave their cats and dogs outside? what do you think of it?
I remember they looked happy chasing pigeons through the streets. Ah it brings back memories.
And In Europe vets recomend to to let dogs out.

Fascinating question! Pretty Kitty nailed the answer, actually… and I do want to add something about the dangers in the USA that cat people risk in letting their cats outdoors without supervision…
Rabies is a problem in the USA. In addition to Coyotes who will grab a cat in a heartbeat, even though it is mandatory in the USA for cats to be vaccinated against Rabies, there are folks who either don’t bother, or others who are not willing to risk the vaccine. Vaccine Associated Sarcoma, while considered rare, is a huge risk for cats. We, who keep our cats indoors feel that the risk of Rabies is fairly low, while the risk of VAS outweighs that risk. Having gone through this horrible disease with one of mine, I only give them their initial vaccine and one booster these days and cross my fingers. One of my kitties contracted VAS after several annual boosters, and I decided it was far too risky.
Additionally, most neighborhoods in the USA are very busy streets. Cats are in danger of being struck by cars. There are mean spirited people that torment cats, and those that steal them.. either to take them home, or to sell them to labs for research. Nasty kids can torment them as well.

Some folks who want to have their cake and eat it, in the USA have built some amazing enclosures which protect their cats and at the same time permit them a form out outdoor life. Some build them as additions to their homes, resembling screened in decks, with cat trees, litter boxes, food and water, where cats can bask in the sun, but be safe from preditors and evil humans.
Some folks halter/leash train their kitties and take them for walks.
I don’t know of any vets that recommend leaving cats or dogs out in the USA., unless they are in a secure enclosure. And of course, the risk of fleas and heartworm is much higher who live outside. Outdoor cats also run the risk of attacks from other outdoor cats, and getting seriously injured.
In the USA, at least, it is said that indoor cats live an average of more than 5 years or more longer than outdoor cats. I keep my kitties indoors with lots of cat trees and other means of stimulation for them. I feel they are a lot safer, at least in the area in which I live which is really dangerous to an outdoor cat.
Hope this adds some facts from the purrspective of a cat lover in the USA.
