can i turn my gas grill into a smoker,it as temped glass on the hood of it ,which is shatered.?
if i take the glass out what would i replace it with,I would also take out the gas burners ,and use wood or charcoal.thx
Yes you can- thin sheet metal would work fine to enclose the box. In true backwoods spirit, I’ve used old license plates (guess who is not going to be the president of the homeowners’ association any time soon).
A good smoker has a separate box for the fire and the food… and you don’t need much fuel to create the low temperature (200-220 degrees, any higher and you are grilling, nor smoking) for smoking, so build a partition in the box (also sheet metal)
I use an old (empty 
) army surplus shell box that I pulled the rubber gasket out of for my firebox. I get it smoking and put it in one end of the grill, then the meat in the other. Indirect low heat with a lot of smoke.
I still have full use of the gas grill when I remove my red-nek firebox.
Hardwood is a far, far superior fuel for smoking. Pecan if you can get it, hickory, oak, and/or fruitwood. Soak it in water overnight so it smokes, not burns. NEVER use evergreen (the sap tastes like poo in a smoker).
Most cabinet shops use oak- if you can find one that will give you clean sawdust, it is easy to use and store.
I also “temper” my smoker at least once a year. I get it really hot and pour lots of hardwood sawdust to it for a while to buildup that nasty sooty coating on everything and burn off any paints, cleaners, etc that could make the meat bitter.
