Cast iron grill smoking?
Everytime I try to use my cast iron grill (the type you put over two burners on the stove top) it smokes terribly and sets off the smoke detectors. I used canola oil to season it. I use the exhuast fan and had the windows open but I ended up having to shut it off. What am I doing wrong?
If you season it with oil, then don’t wipe it completely dry, or season it too often, then the residual oil will smoke as it heats up. Cast iron can only hold so much oil, and if you season it heavily every time you use it, it’s probably too much. Really, a light wipe when you’re done, or maybe even every other time, will be fine. Too much residual oil can become a fire hazard.
